Tool Change System for Industrial Robots

While the automotive production industry has enjoyed a long and successful track record using the Walther quick robotic tool change system, other manufacturing industries have also benefited from the latest technological advancements incorporated into the tool changer system's design.

Designed with features to ensure production line safety, long term reliability and high-cycle accuracy, the amount of unproductive downtime required to perform routine maintenance, untimely repairs or to address safety issues can be kept to a minimum.

A benefit of the automated robotic tool charger's modular design is the ability of a single robot to quickly change between welding, riveting or gripper tools. Measurable gains in productivity are a direct result of using the Walther quick tool change system to it's full potential.

Some of the many quick tool change system features include:

  • Precise mating cycle accuracy of (± .002in / 0.05mm): This accuracy is maintained even after high usage, with some applications reaching 800,000 to 1.5 million mating cycles before routine maintenance is required.
  • Split second tool changes: Using the tool parking station shown below, a connection time of approximately 1.5 seconds and a disconnect time of approximately 1 second can be achieved.
  • A high holding force: Standard design is 1,350 lb static with 2,250 lb static available with optional special design features.
  • Trustworthy safety features: Should a loss of air pressure occur, a self-securing lock feature prevents accidental disconnection of a tool from the robotic arm. Manually removing a tool from the robotic arm is performed using an emergency disconnect feature. Both safety features are standard design.
  • Reliable system's data communication: Using either copper wire or the latest fiber optic technology, low noise data transfer between quick tool changer system components is maintained even in high mating-cycle applications. The system is expandable to allow multiple connections, using a combination of both a low current for system control functions and and a high current as required for welding.

Some of the tool parking station features include:

  • Sturdy steel tube stand: A floor fastening plate is standard with an optional level adjustment base plate.
  • Non-flammable silicon-free plastic cover: A hinged cover protects the tool's mating surface and couplings from foreign objects while parked.
  • Tool stand rollers: The adjustable rollers offer additional tool support during the connection and disconnection transition.
  • Reliable system's data communication: Using either copper wire or the latest fiber optic technology, low noise data transfer between quick tool changer system components is maintained even in high mating cycle applications.
